Dr. Arun Kannan

Dr. Arun Kannan has had a remarkable career in ortho pedics having started at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in 2006. He worked for two and half years at world class hospitals in Melbourne (Australia), Minneapolis (USA) and Richmond (USA). He trained with the best of doctors who are pioneers in the fields of knee replacement, partial knee replacement, hip replacement and revision joint replacement and has written articles in several international journals.


Over the years he has accumulated a great experience in orthopaedics and sports medicine and has performed over 500 hip and knee replacement surgeries apart from numerous key-hole surgeries. He specializes in revision (re-do) hip and knee replacements and bone tumors at Apollo Hospitals, Greams road, Chennai. He is an avid researcher involved in designing new devices for orthopaedic use and is an adjunct faculty at the department of engineering design at IIT, Chennai.

Brief summary of professional training:

MS orthopaedics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi

Dr Arun Kannan obtained All India 3rd rank in PG entrance exam and qualified to pursue ortho pedics from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. AIIMS in general and the department of orthopaedics at AIIMS in particular have undisputedly been ranked number one in India for several years. Dr Arun Kannan was awarded BBarun scholarship for his excellence as an outstanding PG in ortho pedics.

Fellowship in Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty, Melbourne, Australia – Jan 2011- June 2011

He pursued a fellowship in lower limb arthroscopy and arthroplasty with Dr Stephen McMahon one of the most renowned ortho pedic surgeons of Melbourne, Australia. Dr McMahon was a pioneer of hip resurfacing surgery in Australia and has thousands of successful hip resurfacings to his credit. Dr Arun Kannan has authored 2 international publications with Dr McMahon. The fellowship is accredited by the Australian ortho pedic Association.

Fellowship in Hip and Knee/Tumor, University of Minnesota, USA – August 2011- July 2012

Dr Arun Kannan worked with Dr Edward Cheng, former president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society of North America, for a year at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA. Dr Arun Kannan specialized in the treatment of osteonecrosis, tumors and joint infections during his tenure with Dr Cheng. The fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Fellowship in Hip and Knee Reconstruction, Virginia Commonwealth University, USA – August 2012- July 2013

Dr Arun Kannan completed the prestigious fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at Richmond, Virginia, USA. The fellowship offers a complete spectrum of hip and knee reconstructive procedures including hip and knee replacements, corrective osteotomies, hip and knee arthroscopy and complex revision procedures. It is one the few centres offering training in hip arthroplasty through muscle sparing, minimally invasive direct anterior approach. Dr William Jiranek, the director of the program is a nationally renowned surgeon and a pioneer of partial knee replacement.
